Detox a good idea....if done properly

There are a number of approaches and ideas regarding "detoxification". My definition is that of a multiphase approach to liberating toxins from the body. Toxins can include a host of materials ranging from toxic metals to pesticide/herbicide residues. The ideal approach is to increase the mobilization of these items from your body, increase the excretion and assist the liver function. These three aspects are critical to a proper detox. In order to properly accomplish the detox, a protein modified fasting method is safest.

The concept of mobilization can be accomplished via the use of a fast which can include a caloric restriction along with a decreased carbohydrate intake, while maintaining adequate proteins to achieve at minimum a protein net neutral balance. The loss of muscle tissue is inappropriate for any fasting method.

The next area of concern is the GI system. By increasing our intake of both fiber and fluids we can effectively stimulate a more efficient loss of the mobilized trash. Occasionally the use of a laxative or stool softener is also employed.

The livers function will be under an increased load with the liberation of toxic materials. There are two primary aspects of liver enzymes. The first system referred to as the cytochrome P450 members act as a sorting mechanism. The second phase enzymes, consisting of 6 pathways, are specific for different chemical compositions. All require an adequate amount of basic nutrients. It's not uncommon to have a decreased amount of a factor that is essential for adequate function.

Functional liver testing consisting of a challenge via acetaminophen (Tylenol), aspirin and caffeine. The detoxification levels of these substances can be used to provide you with a more targeted nutritional approache.

Generally it would be safe to utilize a broad spectrum of liver specific nutrients, to make certain of an adequate liver response.

Keep in mind that your ability to excrete, process and liberate the toxins will be a unique situation. Based on this information, we at the Center, design a protocol that will safely and comfortably meet your needs.

I would encourage you to consider the detox quiz to get an idea if this approach would be potentially advantageous.
